Welcome to the EUCARE website!
EUCARE was set up in May 1998 as a partnership between the Commission on European Affairs of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and UCB Pharma. The abbreviation stands for European Concerted Action and Research in Epilepsy. Members of the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) joined the team shortly after and an expanded Management Group oversaw the programme. In October 2003, the entire operation, including the EUCARE logo, was transferred to ILAE and IBE jointly and in perpetuity.
EUCARE has two main areas of activity: research and advocacy. The former goal focuses on the setting up of a prospective outcome study in newly diagnosed epilepsy using a computerised case record form. This has now been developed and is ready for testing. The acronym FONDE (Following Outcomes in Newly Diagnosed Epilepsy) has been given to this ambitious project. The main aims of FONDE are to monitor pharmacological outcomes in people with newly diagnosed epilepsy and to document the effects of epilepsy and its treatment on aspects of everyday life. These data will feed into the political aspects of the EUCARE programme linking clinical outcomes with a range of scientific, educational and public policy projects geared at improving the lives of people with epilepsy across Europe and beyond.
I hope you will be able to join us in these ambitious aims. We are currently actively seeking investigators willing to take part in the FONDE study.
